A Schelm, who suspects money making behind it: Shortly before the Sonic Origins retro collection, Sega pulls four classic Sonic games from the offer of digital stores. Without naming reasons.
A week ago, Sega announced the Retro-Collection Sonic Origins (we reported): This includes the souped-up hedgehog-originals Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2 as well as Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Plus Sonic CD. It will be released on June 23 and should probably sell as well as possible. But what could reduce this bundle to buy? Exactly, the fact that the games contained in a cleanly emulated form have long been available in the digital stores. It’s stupid if you want to earn coal twice with cult games not only twice, but also a third time…
This results in the rather uncool move that on May 20, 2022, around a month before the Sonic Origins release, the four games are deducted from the stores. In Sega speech, this means: “The company will take the digital versions of the independent titles that will be included in the upcoming game Sonic Origins on May 20, 2022. These include Sonic The Hedgehog 1, 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic CD. ” However, there are also exceptions: “Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2 will continue to be available on the Switch via Sega Ages and Sonic The Hedgehog 2 will continue to be playable via the Sega Mega Drive on Nintendo Switch.”
